Functional Imaging
The same principle can be used to detect activity in certain brain regions while working on tasks, this is called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). If you repeat a certain situation – e.g. the presentation of an image of a celebrity – many times ( > 30 ), we are able to extract the brain responses to this situation. This signal is projected onto the test person’s structural MRI-Scan of the brain and colour-coded marks show where the event elicited special brain activity. By this method functional brain maps can be generated. We are beginning to understand in much greater detail the brain regions which are involved in visual analyses, memory, emotional processing and inner linguistic description.
